A recent NMN study in humans evaluated the potential effects of NMN supplementation on arterial stiffness and blood pressure.
“Several human clinical trials indicate that NR and NAM supplementation decrease the risk factors of CVDs, such as hypertension, arterial stiffness, and elevated level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol 13, 14.”
Although NMN has been proven to improve vascular dysfunction in mice, it has not been thoroughly evaluated in humans.
12-Week Randomized, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study
The study involved 36 participants between the ages of 40 and 65-years-old.
Each person took one capsule of 125 mg of NMN 2x per day, or a placebo.
Researchers created a subgroup of NMN study participants, which included individuals with above-average blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), or blood glucose levels.
NMN’s Impact on Arterial Stiffness
Arterial stiffness of participants was measured through a test called brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV).
A higher baPWV indicates a higher stiffness in the arteries, which can be a sign or predictor of cardiovascular disease.
The levels of arterial stiffness in the NMN group were lower than that of the placebo group, but it wasn’t statistically significant.
Results Show Significant Improvements in Arterial Stiffness in Subgroup
Results showed that in participants in the NMN subgroup with an above-average BMI or blood glucose levels, baPWV values were significantly decreased, compared to the placebo group.
Their levels of arterial stiffness had greatly decreased.
NMN Greatly Decreases Blood Pressure in Subgroup
The NMN subgroup of participants who had higher-than average blood glucose levels showed a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure.
“Therefore, as observed in the subgroup analysis, the ameliorating effect of NMN supplementation on diastolic blood pressure may help reduce CVD risk, even in people who seem to be healthy.”
Conclusion
In this study, NMN supplementation of 250 mg per day provided notable vascular health improvements for those with less than optimal health.
“These results suggest that NMN supplementation potentially improves vascular health in middle-aged adults, especially in those with high BMI or blood glucose levels,” according to the study.
