The Science Behind Resveratrol: Metabolic Health Breakthroughs

Resveratrol is a heavily studied anti-aging compound that’s increasingly popular due to it’s unique antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and cellprotective benefits.   

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 25 Resveratrol studies – and here we’ll provide you with the results and conclusions of those studies.

The Most Potent Form is Trans-Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a polyphenol commonly found in various food sources, such as red wine, berries, dark chocolate, and peanuts. It exists in two forms: Trans-Resveratrol and Cis-Resveratrol.

Studies Compared Changes in Health Risk-Factors

For the meta-analysis, researchers chose studies that had similar participants and health measurements.

They analyzed studies which measured mean changes in health risk-factors, including:

  • cholesterol levels (total, LDL and HDL)
  • body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)
  • hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
  • HOMA index, insulin, leptin, fasting glucose, fat percentage, and adiponectin level.

Results from 25 Human Studies on Resveratrol

The results showed that Resveratrol intake significantly lowered cholesterol and blood glucose levels (HbA1c, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL).

“These results suggest that Resveratrol (RSV) has a dramatic impact on regulating lipid and glucose metabolism, and the major clinical value of Resveratrol intake is for obese and diabetic patients.” (1)  
In addition, participants given Resveratrol had a decrease in waist circumference.
“To summarize, the findings indicated that RSV supplementation exerts anti-obesity effects by regulating glycolipid metabolism and improving metabolic disturbances,” according to the study.
